Three Step Sparring
Three step sparring is designed for the beginner to learn the basic techniques. Three step sparring teaches the student many things i.e. proper distance, correct facing, forearm conditioning, correct blocks, correct stances, counter attacks and timing.
It can be summed up in three main things: Timing, Distance and Focus (TDF).
Attacker starts in left walking stance, obverse low outer forearm block.
Attack: Three middle section obverse punches in walking stance to the opponent’s solar plexus.
Defender starts in parallel ready stance.
Basic Level
1
Defence
- Right leg back walking stance, middle inner forearm block to inside of punch.
- Left leg back walking stance, middle inner forearm block to inside of punch.
- Right leg back walking stance, middle inner forearm block to inside of punch.
Counter Attack
- On the spot, mid-section reverse punch.

Defence
- Left leg back, L-stance middle inner forearm block to outside of punch.
- Right leg back, L-stance middle inner forearm block to outside of punch.
- Left leg back, L-stance middle inner forearm block to outside of punch.
Counter Attack
- Move left leg forward 45 degrees, move the right leg behind the opponent’s front leg into a left L-stance, execute a right knifehand side strike to the back of the neck.

Defense
- Left leg back L-stance, middle inward outer forearm block to inside of punch.
- Right leg back L-stance, middle inward outer forearm block to inside of punch.
- Left leg back L-stance, middle inward outer forearm block to inside of punch.
Counter Attack
- Slide forward in left L-stance and execute a right backfist front strike to the opponent’s nose.

Defense
- Left leg back, L-stance middle inner forearm block to outside of punch.
- Right leg back, L-stance middle inner forearm block to outside of punch.
- Left leg back, L-stance middle inner forearm block to outside of punch.
Counter Attack
- Move the left leg around into a sitting stance, pivoting on the right foot, measure punch with left hand, execute a double punch to the opponent’s floating ribs / kidney area.
Intermediate Level

Defence
- Right leg back L-stance, middle outer forearm block to inside of punch.
- Left leg back L-stance, middle outer forearm block to inside of punch.
Counter Attack
- Move right leg into sitting stance (45 degrees to opponent), execute a left outer forearm block and a high section punch to opponent’s jaw.

Defence
- Right leg back L-stance, middle outwards knifehand block to inside of punch.
- Left leg back L-stance, middle outwards knifehand block to inside of punch.
Counter Attack
- Move right leg into sitting stance (45 degrees to opponent), execute left outwards knifehand block and a high inwards knifehand strike to the side of opponent’s neck.

Defence
- Right leg back L-stance, middle outer forearm block to inside of punch.
- Left leg back L-stance, middle outer forearm block to inside of punch.
- Slide back to the right at 45 degree angle, into right L-stance with a forearm guarding block.
Counter Attack
- Execute a right front snap kick landing in right walking stance, and follow with a double punch to the solar plexus.
Advanced Level

Defence
- Right leg back L-stance, middle knifehand block to the inside of punch.
- Left leg back L-stance, middle knifehand block to the inside of punch.
- Slide back at a 45 degree angle into a right L-stance whilst performing a forearm guarding block.
Counter Attack
- Execute a right leg side kick, landing in left L-stance with a right back fist side strike to the opponent’s temple.

Defence
- Right leg back into L-stance, middle palm pushing block to outside of punch.
- Left leg back L-stance, middle palm pushing block to outside of punch.
- Right leg back L-stance, middle palm pushing block and slide back at a 45 degree angle to the outside of your opponent, performing a forearm guarding block.
Counter Attack
- Execute a right mid section turning kick to solar plexus, put kicking foot alongside opponent’s front foot, landing in a vertical stance whilst executing a knifehand strike to the base of the neck.

Defence
- Right leg back L-stance, middle knifehand block to the inside of punch.
- Left leg back L-stance, middle knifehand block to the inside of punch.
- Slide back at a 45 degree angle into a right L-stance whilst performing a forearm guarding block.
Counter Attack
- Execute a reverse side kick with right leg, land in a right walking stance whilst executing a left reverse knifehand strike to opponent’s neck. Snap right leg back, left L-stance, forearm guarding block.
